The Royal Visit 1977
In 1977 the nation celebrated the Silver Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, marking 25 years since her accession to the throne. Her father, King George VI, had died on 6th February 1952 whilst the then Princess Elizabeth was away in Kenya with the Duke of Edinburgh. Tradition requires that the monarch accedes to the throne instantly so at no time is the country left without a monarch. This, incidentally, means that the monarch's flag, The Royal Standard, can never fly at half-mast. The Coronation took place the following year, on 2 June 1953.
