Reputed to be constructed from stone taken from Stockton Castle when it was demolished in 1664. Once the home of Edmund Harvey, pewterer, who started Sunday Schools in Stockton, and thought of putting a cut in the Tees to shorten the journey and deepen the draught of the river (so larger ships could use it).
