As a little girl I remember walking along the viaduct with my dad and the dog. I was very little but I remember how warm the air was from the top. I was 8 in 1979, I watched from a field over the main road as they blew up a piece of my past.

Like many I remembe the time you could walk over the top of the remaining part of the viaduct. I also recall the Sunday? morning that they blew it up. Such a shame a part of North east history has disappeared.

For many years there were photographs of the construction of the viaduct in the Vane Arms Thorpe Thewles. Sadly when it was "modernised and re-furbished" around 2000 this collection was sold off. I suspect there are some left in the village, if only they could be located. I too watched the demolition of the viaduct from a field to the northwest of Middlefield Farm. A sad end to a great civil enginineering achievement.

For anyone who is interested Thorpe does have its own history group and can be found online where there is a little more infomation on the viaduct and the village itself.

See exclusive video of the demolition of Thorpe Thewles viaduct on the Remember When blog on gazettelive. This is due to be published on June 27 with some dramatic pictures taken by our photographers. Hope you will enjoy it.
