Streets of Stockton
Description
I would be interested to hear whether any of the local History Buffs would have any information about this House No.178 Norton Road. It is situated on Norton Road at the Northern end of what used to be called Providence Terrace and the corner of Talbot Street. There is a Plaque on the front of the House bearing the words 'Providence Cottage'. I purchased this property in 1955 and lived there for five years. There were indications inside the house that it had at one time been connected to the house next door, which would have made it quite a large place. It also seemed to be much older than the other houses along the Terrace. Silly as this may sound, the Ghost of an old Lady was seen by several people including myself. The accompanying Photograph was taken in 2000 when I was visiting Teesside from Australia. Photograph and text courtesy of Mr Harry Rhodes, Hoppers Cross, Australia.

My family owned No 4 providence Terr. From early 1890's to 1913 and beyond. Their name was William and Hannah Watson. They had at least 8 Children who all set up home around Talbot st and Ware st, compton st. They owned shops and businesses around the area too. A Pawnbrokers, provisions and a Butchers. They had a lot of bad blood and many of the boys in the family died in their 20's and 30's my GGgrandad from alcohol abuse.Don't know of any women who could of died and been haunting the place but quite possible from this time as things were pretty tough for all I think.
