I may be wrong but I think this is inaccurate The building photographed was certainly still standing a few years ago its at the top of Harrowgate Lane where it meet Darlington Back Lane next to the Mitre pub But if you read the comments about Hardwick Junior School (named Harrowgate Junior School when I attended in the early 80's) I think this house once owned by Durhams Hauliers is still standing

I think Bob has got the point on this one, I remember that nursing home from the early eighties, I was a taxi driver back then and picked up many a fare from that front door. I know the house Darren is talking about and thats still their, I recall it was once owned by former Boro player Alan Foggon.

Can anyone shed a light, is this the Hardwick Hall that used to operate as a maternity hospital in 1960? If it is then I was born there.

Hardwick Hall the maternity hospital is in Sedgefield. Now a smart hotel complex.

This house was called 'Bishopsgarth' and I think it is still standing, Alan Foggon used to live in Harrogate Lane, opposite the hospice.

I am about 99% sure this is the house next to the Mitre that’s still standing and it looks pretty much the same to this day

I think there is some confusion here. The house in the photo looks like the lovely one next door to the Mitre, BUT Hardwick Hall was located at the other end of Harrowgate Lane, opposite Letch Lane, the turn off for Carlton. That was the house built for the ICI Director. I think it was bought by ICI at one stage and used for business. I can remember 'camping' in a reception room with some pals from St Cads Youth Club, one weekend to 'guard' a Marquee that had been erected for a fete (late 1960's). The house was behind a lot of trees and was difficult to see from the road.

This , is Hardwick Hall near the Two Mile House on the way to Letch Lane, I took the photo in 1981 I attended many I.C I 'Time & Study'Seminars in this building who's earliest I.C.I occupant in the 1930s was Dr Zeally. We had first class dining with waiter service and recreation room, with a snooker room in this magnificent late Victorian building , set in about 2 acres of woodland Now demolished and both housing and Care-home on site

Hi Bob Harbron , a little off the subject . during your ICI days did you know a real English Gent by the Name of Allan Benington . He lived on Bishopton Road West. just past Grays Road. on the left heading up to the ring road. Any one ells remember Alan Benington , I sold him an as New LHD 1984 White Cadallac. He wanted it so his aged Mother could get in and out of the Big Door, ??

Darren Bruce 26/12 you are absolutely right, this is the property located next to the Mitre Pub in the photograph and is certainly not a photograph of the demolished Hardwick Hall, although it was very like it in appearance. as stated in other comments this beautiful outstanding property was owned by the Durham family.

This is definately not Hardwick Hall, it's the large house on Darlington Back Lane close to the junction with Harrowgate Lane and next to the Mitre pub.

I work at the care home which is now situated where Hardwick Hall once stood.I would be very interested to learn of any information about the picture in question as we have a monthly newsletter within the home.I think it would be nice for the residents to learn about the history of what was once there.

Victoria Smith - I'm afraid the picture in question is not Hardwick Hall! This particular photograph is of the large house on Darlington Back Lane, next to the Mitre pub. If you use the "Search database" facility on the homepage and search for Hardwick Hall you will find a photograph I uploaded of that fine Victorian buillt property, along with a short history of it. Also, there are two photographs of Hardwick Hall in Robert Woodhouse's 1994 book, "Stockton Past".

Going off at a tangent here but I was born in Hardwick Hall on 2 January 1957. Does anyone know where the records are kept for births at the nursing home during that time please?

To Joyce Mead. Hi Joyce if your question from 11 Nov 07 has not been answered then your best chance of information like this is your local library, where else. Roy.

Looking on Ancestry.com a Joyce F Morris was born in Durham S.E., 1st qtr. of 1957. You need to contact Stockton registrars on 01642 527720 to see where the records are kept for this part of County Durham.

Bob Harbron - I'm afraid you are completely mistaken, this is not Hardwick Hall. This is a photograph of the large house next to the Mitre pub on Darlington Back Lane.

MIKE; YOU ARE CORRECT THIS HOUSE IS SITUATED JUST AROUND THE CORNER FROM THE MITRE, IT WAS OWNED BY BOBBY DURHAM WHO RAN BOBBY DURHAM HAULAGE, I REMEMBER MOVING SOMEONE INTO THE HOUSE IN THE SEVENTIES WHEN I WORKED FOR KW DEVEREUAX & SONS, THE HEAVIEST ITEMS WERE CONCRETE MUSHROOMS WHICH WE HAD TO PLACE ALONG THE DRIVE, FROM THE GATE TO THE HOUSE, I THINK SOME OF THEM ARE STILL THERE. IF YOU LOOK AT THE PHOTOGRAPH AND FOLLOW THE DRIVE FROM THE FRONT DOOR TO THE TREE, YOU CAN JUST MAKE OUT ONE OF THE CONCRETE MUSHROOMS.

What’s in a Name? Don’t need a camera or a photograph to put my name against, honest! This saga has been going on now since Dec 06, I’ve got to admit Bob Harbron that when you get the bit in between your teeth there is not a lot that will shift you. To all you others, the Brian Swales and Mikes out there, pick up the phone and ring the Post Office or call in to your local library, I did and to top it all what ever you want to call the place I am just thawing out here after a marathon walk to the target, for want of a name the house next to the Mitre Pub, the Mitre being on Harrowgate Lane and the house is around the corner on Darlington Back Lane. During the winter months as now there is a big pond in front of the house where there is a natural dip which holds water and in need of drainage. The house is not big enough to hold Time & Study Seminars held by ICI, dining with waiter service, recreation and snooker rooms. That’s all. Roy.

I quite agree, this is the house on Darlington Back Lane. I used to live at Fairfield and this house was on the left after turning right from Bishopton Road West.

I can 100% say that this house is called Bishopsgarth House as it has the name on one of the gate posts and it is located next the The Mitre pub, my boyfriend lives on Wimpole Road and his house backs onto Darlington Back lane. I can see this house out of his window through the trees. Lovely looking house, I'd love to have a look around inside!
