This photograph of the Number 89 United Bus Service from Stockton to Guisborough/Lingdale is estimated to be taken around 1951. It shows the typical conductress of the era and the small single deckers that were so popular. The lady in the picture is my Auntie, Violet Wilson, still alive and well and living in Stockton.

This is unlikely to be Stockton as the 89 service ran from Middlesbrough to Danby via Guisborough and Lingdale in early postwar years. The service never ran from Stockton.

Going to Durham for a Punt.- Did you ever go to Durham City on the no 55 United Red Bus from Stockton in the mid 60’s, well I used to get it from the mile and a half, in between The Mile House and The two mile House (The Horse and Jockey). Every village and hamlet visited, it must have taken all of one and half hours, the clippie whiling away the hours, either knitting or going around talking to her regulars through the cigarette and pipe smoke, dropping them off where they wanted to get off and not where the bus stop’s stated, giving you what you might say a public service. Taking so long on the trip meant that three hours were taken out of your day; the only advantage it gave us was easy access to the bus stop near home. Having a brain wave made sense when I had it, try the train, not as easy access but the journey time greatly reduced. Unless you have great thighs and are very fit don’t bother getting the train to Durham, or should I say don’t get the train back, there is a quarter mile hike up a 1/3 gradient, no fun after a hard hot day either rowing or punting on the river. Roy.

Let me put you right about the time from Stockton to Durham. First of all, the running time for the route 55 was 50mins and once you left your stop, the horse and jockey, the next main stop was Segdefield then onto Coxhoe where your time for leaving for Durham an hour and half hour, give the crew 1min to unload and reload for Newcastle there was not many times you could take your foot of the pedal before you were reloading for newcastle. I am an ex united conductor-driver.
