I can remember the great times in the 1st Thornaby Boys Brigade and belonging to the football team, not sure of the location in the photo could be 'Littleboy Park'. I'm front row on right shielding my eyes from the 'relentless paparazzi' and football scouts!! Derek Middleditch, Geoff Dunwell,Eric Fordy (with the ball) and the Sayers Brothers. I was often a reserve, I recall being beaten 17-0! Mr Wain  was the officer in charge. Our company headquarters was Peel St. Methodist Chapel, the vicar was Rev. Spargo. The park next to the chapel was called 'The Rec'. I thought it was called that because everything was run down and broken - many years later the Chapel was gone, the Recreational Park was still there and still a wreck. Is the 'Rec' still there? I live in NZ and haven't been back to UK for a while. Enjoyed the Boys Brigade and had hopes of becoming a sergeant - only because they had a peaked pillbox hat, very French Foreign Legion, I fancied myself as 'Beau Gest'  One of the requirements of going to camp, first item on the kit list, was the Bible. We didn't have one at home so I borrowed one from the Church furtively, but I did return it promptly after camp. (Probably why I didn't make sergeant)

Alan Wealleans.

Yes Jim, the park is still there. My parents, who lived in Stockton, took my two daughters there whilst child minding for my Wife and I in the early seventies. They had much fun on things as slides, swings and tea pot lids etc. My girls are now 42 and 41 years of age and can still remember those early days.

I was interested to read in Jim Instone's account about his time in the Boys Brigade. Like Jim, I was a member of the BB in Stockton and also didn't make sergeant. Although I did become a leader in the Life Buoys and eventually an officer in the BB itself. I still have the Warrant Card and other regalia and it's some 40 years ago since I finished with the BB due to work commitments at that time. It was certainly an enjoyable experience belonging to the BB and I look back on those times with a lot of affection.
