Co-op Coronation Cake - 1937


Description

The cake baked by Stockton Co-operative Society to mark the coronation of King George VI in 1937. As the picture shows the cake weighed half a ton and the ingredients included 1080 eggs, 3.5 cwt of fruit, 1 cwt of butter and 1.25 cwt of sugar. Also shown is a medal worn by the Past President of the Stockton Co-operative Grocery Branch Manager's Association. Both items courtesy of Diane Nicholson.

Wow - what a phenomenal piece of craftsmanship, and engineering! Good job the coronation didn't take place a couple of years later or they would never have got all those ingredients when there was rationing. It seems a shame to put the knife into it, but does anybody know what happened to the cake?
